Buena Vista Surf Lodge was our last stop on our Nicaragua trip. It was the perfect ending as we practiced morning yoga from the deck watching the sunrise, ate meals watching the sunset and then gazing at the millions of stars around us.
Buena Vista is an eco-lodge above Playa Maderas. The owners are from Holland and moved here over 10 years ago and now have two children and live down the hill from the lodge. On a rotating basis, they employ international managers to take care of the property and plan/prep meals for the guests along with local employees. The managers, during our visit, were a couple from Australia who left their hectic law careers to travel and live slower.
The local employees are all paid a fair wage, offered part-time work so they can be with their families, build up a pension and have health insurance. The daily meals range from local to international but are always fresh, unique, healthy and delicious!
Sleeping in the cabanas was truly a jungle experience. The doors/windows open wide to let in the ocean breeze so you sleep listening to all the jungle noises including howler monkeys. If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing, digital detox retreat, this is the place.
